Gourmet cupcakes in a jar

I love cupcakes. Not only is that not news, it doesn’t prove me to be original or unusual either. I’ve discovered that cupcakes are truly a defining icon of our present day society. From the little cakes themselves to whimsical art that animates the cupcake with human characteristics to snazzy t-shirts that let you have your cupcake and be stylin’, too, cupcakes are universally popular.

And just when it seemed like my cupcake love couldn’t deepen, I discover yet another way to enjoy these beguiling little treats: in a jar. “But why?” you ask? Forgive me but I counter with “why not?”

Not only are cupcakes in a jar less messy to eat, they’re portable and they make people smile! Although you can easily make your own (like we did at the Test Kitchen – that’s our handy work above), you also can buy these yummies ready-made.

• In Canada, contact Milsean bakery in Abbotsford, B.C. (I hear their buttercrunch candy is great, too); their birthday cakes, Irish apple cakes and figgy puddings are baked in jars. They’ve been unavailable for the last 6 months due to jar supply issues but are back!

• In the US, Fat Daddy Bakery in Illinois is widely acknowledged as the originator of the cupcake in a jar concept. I haven’t tried their product but the buzz I hear is all good.

Would you eat a cupcake from a jar? Or, perhaps a better question is how many cupcakes in a jar do you think you could eat before you needed to be a person on a couch?

Mmmm….that looks like a ‘real breakfast’ to me!

  2. Great idea, especially for picnics! And coincidentally, I’m going on a picnic this weekend. I’ll give it a whirl.

Beth’s breakfast idea isn’t bad either. After all, what’s a muffin? Just a hearty cupcake with a less decadent name.

Lauren at Lloyd & Lauren has been making cheesecake in a jar, mudslide pie in a jar and apple pie in a jar. I think it’s a great idea!

  4. Glad to see the jar manufacturer’s have such a bright future! Thanks for the link, Kitt.

So you actually bake the cupcake in the jar and eat it with a spoon? Yours look beautiful. You should go into the cupcake-jar design business! Martha Stewart’s got nothing on you.

The examples above weren’t baked in a the jar since we wanted to add a yummy layer of fruit and frosting to the middle. You can bake the cupcakes in the jars though and just frost the tops.

How safe is the food baked in a jar.?

  12. danamccauley says:

Good question. I would expect it to be as safe as any other cake baked in a pan. THe ones we made were served within a day or two so the jar was just like a tupperware or other container. The figgy pudding from Milsean (linked above) is well sealed and has a best before date far in the future.

Do you put the frosting on top of hot cakes or do you wait for it to cool? How is the jar sealed? I guess the safety is also what I am concerned about. I would like to order some as I do not bake but I am really concerned about this. Thank you so much.

I would imagine that they would be perfectly safe. People bake in glass containers all the time…the only difference is this is a different shape.

We used to sell these at our cafe/restaurant in Toronto…they used to be gone in a zap!
We never baked them in the jar in order to layer fillings and chocolate chips/sprinkles/nuts in between. My favourite was Black and White- moist choc. cake with vanilla buttercream with crushed oreos, topped with a dark chocolate ganache…mmmmmm…almost makes me want to give up my hiatus..almost!

Just wanted to leave a heads up regarding baking cupcakes in a preserving jar. This is glass and not pyrex therefore I would not recommend baking anything in preserving jars as glass can easily break in a dry heat such as an oven.
