9:15 a.m. Yesterday – Sabrina’s station

One of the most frequently asked questions members on our team report trying to answer is “what’s it like to work in a test kitchen?”  Truth is, it’s a great job if you like to cook and solve puzzles. Here’s another way to say it: working in a  test kitchen is like  combining home ec class with science lab but with no lockers, spares or cute teenaged boys to flirt with during the boring parts.

I took this picture yesterday morning after I saw Sabrina’s station all set up and ready for a day of recipe testing. Looking at it now, I realize that a picture really is worth 1,000 words: As you can see, you measure things in a lot of different ways in a test kitchen just like in science class.   In fact, if as a recipe tester you don’t spend a lot of time jotting down measurements of various kinds, chances are you won’t measure up in this business!

I don’t think I could work in a test kitchen. I’m just not that organized!

Holly, I know, it’s crazy! All of a sudden I just peoppd out. I’m kind of nervous to go to the doctor today to see how much weight I have gained. Our scale broke around the time I found out I was expecting, so I have no idea how much I weigh.

  2. I’m happy to see the ruler there. One of my big complaints in kitchens is cooks not really knowing how big 1/8″ is. I see it a lot in cooking classes.

  3. Rosa says:

A great job! I’d love to try working in a tes kitchen…

    Cheers,

    Rosa

  4. thumbbook says:

I could start out working as organized as that, but somehow somewhere in the middle, it looks like a storm had passed over🙂 Great post! If you have time do drop by at Foodista.com – the cooking encyclopedia everyone can edit. Thanks!

  5. Elra says:

Oh, you can hire me. I think I am very organized! he..he..he..
    Cheers,
    Elra

  6. Two oven timers? Great idea. I’m going to get myself a second one.

I often start out this organized, but it doesn’t stay that way for long. Very interesting glimpse into the job.

  7. Diva says:

You know, there’s something very inviting about that picture. Love it!🙂

  8. Hélène says:

I would love to be in a test kitchen. I’m really organized also.

  9. Sabrina says:

I’m not saying we have a lot of boring parts during our day, but I wouldn’t complain if we had some cute boys around to flirt with ; ) I think we should see if there’s room in the budget!

  10. adrian says:

I’m lucky enough to have been to the test kitchen, and I can testify that Sabrina’s corner looks frighteningly organised, even during a tasting.

  11. Cheryl says:

Sabrina, methinks you should ask for a raise. The boss obviously likes you.

  12. adrian says:

Also, I’d like to applaud Sabrina’s choice in measuring bowls: I’m a dork for Pyrex and I have a number of the large bowls. I use the 2 quart bowl for mixing m’ banana bread – it rules.

  13. danamccauley says:

Okay, this thread is on the verge of having the comments closed down. Really Cheryl, in this economy you suggest a raise?

I do luvs ya though Sabrina! So, I’m not going to tell Reg what you said about cute boys!

  14. Amy says:

Sabrina really does keep us all in line! I always feel bad when I am in the kitchen with her as I tend to spread out so much…

  15. farida says:

I would love to work in a test kitchen. Sounds like a responsible job but fun too:)

  16. Heather says:

It sounds like the perfect job for one of my former teachers. She was my home ec. teacher as well as my science teacher…come to think of it…the other home ec. teacher was also a science teacher.
