No gym required — really!

Who has time to go to the gym? I’ve always believed in the philosophy that to be healthy, you need to eat nutritious foods and incorporate lots of physical activity into your lifestyle. But like so many other people, I find it challenging to practise what I preach. After a busy day at work, trudging out to the gym to fight for a treadmill has no appeal.

That’s why I was excited to be asked to be a contributor in Key Porter’s recent fitness book  No Gym Required, Unleash Your Inner Rock Star by celebrity trainer Jennifer Cohen. Jennifer’s opinion is that you don’t need to spend a lot of money or time to improve your health. Designed to “unleash your inner rock star” Jennifer offers advice on how to adopt a healthier lifestyle by setting attainable goals, choosing the right foods and getting fit. I love the visual, step-by-step instructions for exercises that you do can anytime, anywhere!

As part of Team Jennifer, we developed a two-week menu featuring fresh, wholesome foods to make it easy to get a jump start on getting lean and fit. Unlike starvation diets, the 1,500 calorie-a-day meal plan is practical and designed to keep you fueled throughout the day. Two of our terrific interns Shirley Walsh and Melanie Chislett helped out with research and it was great to be able to include them in this project. Check out the book and the website at www.ngrfit.com.

Where do you work out? At home? Outside? Or at the gym?

I do a little gym at home and go out for walks…

    Cheers,

Oh, Amy. How your question pains me. Hmph. I would love to say that I exercise like a demon all year long but truthfully, I’m a fair weather athlete. Although I think abut exercising in the winter, I prefer to walk outdoors and to play tennis. The gym gives me boredom induced hives.

My dogs take me for a walk… that’s about it.
I wouldn’t mind a belly dancing exercise course – if it was on a DVD.. where I can dance at home with the puppies. They do love it when I dance. 🙂

I would like to say first and foremost I don’t believe in the term “diet”. Diet = temporary. Now eating healthy *and permanently* is another thing.

I’ve been hot/cold with the gym…Tho’ lately I’ve been doing awesome with it….I used to do sports in JH/HS and since then…well..I gotta have a gym. Not a demon but I do try my best…In fact right now I’ve been the fittest I’ve ever been….

I have had gym memberships that I enjoyed and used while they were there but for the most part I work out at home and outside. Walking largely but also golf, hiking, bicycling, gardening. (I do enjoy being lazy, too)

I walk outside all year, but I’m aware that as I get older I really need to add weight training to my routine. I have little dumb bells right in my bedroom. The last time I picked them up was, I think, 2006.

Outside definitely, with an occasional yoga class.

Amy – I agree in part with your feeling about the word ‘diet’ – the literal meaning is basically “what you eat on a regular basis” -however the weight loss industry has adopted the term and construed it into something different.
For some people, making a short term shift can help reprogram some of our less than healthy habits. That is the point of the two week jump start menu in NGR. But long term, it is all about balancing food choices in a way that is healthy for your lifestyle.

I run….the great thing about running is there are NO excuses. You can do it anywhere, anytime and all you need is a good pair of shoes. You burn on average 100 calories per mile based on a 10 minute/mile. Not only is it fantastic for your waist line, but mentally it clears your head and is one of the best stress relievers. I recently read an article in Runner’s Wolrd about a therapist who takes their patients running instead of lying on a couch.
Amy-I hope you included some of your amazing recipes from Fiber Boost!?!?!

I really like the sound of this book and will look for it. As far as working out goes – I belong to a gym and my gym has a pool. I swim 3 miles a week (a mile every Monday, Wed. and Friday) and weight train at the gym on alternate days.

  11. Another Excellent write up, I will be sure to bookmark this post in my Digg account. Have a great evening.
