Summer contest: win a blender!

BlenderSmoothies, margaritas, gazpacho, pesto… there are so many reasons you need a blender in the summer!

According to the folks at Oster (who kindly donated the lovely blender pictured here for my contest), Canadians increasingly love to whirl their food up. From research conducted in 2006, they say Canadian blender ownership increased from 69% in 2003 to 76% in 2006.

My guess is that if you’re one of the 24% of Canadians still blenderless, you’re likely feeling pretty left out. Or, maybe you’ve whizzed up so many daiquiris that your blender is worn out now and you need a new one? To be honest, your motivation for entering my contest makes little difference to me. I just want to give stuff away!

Here’s some specific info about this Oster Blender:
• 600 watts of power is ideal for crushing ice for smooth frozen drinks (like daiquiris – yum!)
• Large 6-cup capacity pitcher style glass jar for better pouring (or you can just put a straw in the pitcher if you’re really thirsty.)
• Easy to clean and easy to use soft touch controls (less cleaning is always a good thing, right?)
• Lid with integrated rubber gasket seal for secure fit (haven’t you always wanted a gasket to blow?)
• Low, Medium and High manual settings for control and flexibility (drop that yoga class!)
• All-Metal Drive system for extra durability (no pesky plastic parts to spend your precious sleep time worrying about.)
• Triple Tech™ Technology (whatever the heck that is…?)
Recommended retail price: $89.99 (But having me use it first = priceless, don’t ya think?).

What I do care about is what you’ll make with this blender. Tell me in the comments section below. Feel free to add a link to recipes if you like or just describe in a few words or lines what you’ll make if you win this blender. Please also add what country you’re from. And, although I can only open this contest to Canadians, I still want to hear your blending ideas so feel free to comment even if you live in Timbuktu! The winner will be announced on Tuesday, June 23rd.

  1. Tracy Cox says:

People, I’ve seen this blender and I’ve tasted the smoothies it makes. This is one fine blender! Do you still have to ask a skill testing question in Canada before you give stuff away Dana?

  2. George Yan says:

Hmmm…since it is summer (I think), I would probably whip up a batch of vichyssoise for a light summer dinner in the blend!

  3. Where to begin? Margaritas (if summer ever arrives here), pesto trapanese (been dying to try it) and all manner of smoothies.

This would definitely be a worthy replacement to my long-suffering blender which recently went to its final resting place!

  4. Anne says:

Smoothies!! I can’t wait for the local berries to arrive so that I can pop them into a smoothie.

I’d also attempt to make bellinis à la Moxies or Milestones! Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  5. Joel says:

Oooohhhh, is it blender drink season?
    Perhaps a Tahoe Julius
1 1/2 parts Grey Goose vodka
    3 parts orange juice
    1 part cream
    1 egg
    1/3 part simple syrup

  6. danamccauley says:

Thanks for these entries! Your ideas are making me hungry!

Can you please be sure to add a line about what country you’re from? I can only ship this product to Canadian residents (Oster, the donor’s request) so I need that info for the draw.

    Thanks,

    Dana

A blender is missing from my roster. I would make Maragaritas, Daiquiris, Gazpacho and the odd sauce. Pick me!

  8. Morning Dana!
I’d most definitely be making more smoothies, and maybe spiking a few of them – vokda goes SO well with frozen fruit!
I’d also be able to whip up a creamy favourite like this: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Pumpkin-Soup/Detail.aspx The old immersion blender just isn’t cutting it any more!

  9. danamccauley says:

BTW: I’m going to use the Dine-O-Matic to choose the winner:

  10. Amy says:

I would make pesto, soy milk, smoothies, cold soups, hot soups, alcoholic/non alcoholic drinks…Anything and everything possible…

I’m located in IL in the USA.

I would make cold/hot soups, soy milk, alcoholic/non alcoholic drinks and smoothies…I’m located in IL in the USA

  12. Barb says:

Smoothies of all different flavors; margaritas, daiquiris, and other “stuff” too. I’m in Canada but my blender came here on the arc.

  13. Natashya says:

I would make the frozen concoctions that help me hang on.
I am Canadian, let me know if I am going to be spending my summer searching for my lost shaker of salt! 😉

  14. Bugger. I’m coveting that blender from my post in the US of A. Here in Philadelphia I use my blender for incessant smoothie-making. Fruit, yogurt, juice whirled together = perfect post-run refuel of carbs and protein! I’ve also been giving my old blender a real run for its money making vinaigrettes for a recipe development project. When that egg yolk and mustard hits the blade, the blender knows what’s coming next!

  15. Jenna says:

OOH! Daquaris, margaritas, smoothies with fresh fruit, fresh strawberry sauce..
I have a great recipe for homemade dog treats but need a blender to puree the liver first so even my dog would love this!
I’m just learning to cook(sad I know) so I can’t even imagine the world a good blender would open to me!

    I’m located in Canada!

  16. Kathryn says:

    Hey Dana,

    What a great giveaway!

I had a blender, but when it died, I thought that I could get by with the food processor, but it is an unhappy compromise.

There are two recipes that my blender excelled at: pesto and a ricotta cheese-spinach-garlic mixture I used for stuff pasta’s.

    I am in Toronto.

    Cheers,

    Kathryn

  17. jacki Armstrong says:

Purred steamed veggies in season to hide in Bella’s food.
Fresh berry and yogurt smoothies for both baby and me.
Even grinding coffee beans, definitely not for baby. Grinding fresh herbs, spices.
The tasty concoctions go on and on….

    In Kingston.

    Yum, yum!!
    Jacki

  18. Shelley says:

Well I’d make one of my favourite summertime drinks.

    1/2 can frozen limeade
    2 c frozen mixed fruit.(cherries,berries,etc)
1 c watermelon. (I freeze it in the summer for drinks)
Enought water to thin it out and make it blendable.
    Tequila
    Melon liquor

Pulse firt four ingredients til smooth. Put and oz of tequila and 1/2 oz of melon liquor in large wine or margarita glass. Top with fruit slushy. Serve with a straw.

  19. My blender is on it’s last legs after a couple of hardworking stints ast baby food maker. It is now on active smoothie duty, especially since The Monster doesn’t like thick smoothies.

I’m still trying to perfect a recipe for a mango lassi, her favourite thing.

You know me, I’m in Calgary.

  20. Andrea says:

Breakfast smoothies! Margaritas on my new balcony! Frosty drinks at my housewarming party in August! Blended coffee drinks!
(All while I save up for my Vitamix.)

Since you’re choosing at random I won’t try to suck up by promising an invitation to drink blended drinks with me. 🙂

  21. Kelly says:

I would make chocolate banana smoothies!

  22. Dani says:

Summertime treat for my boyfriends young kids. We don’t actually have a blender so I use the Magic Bullet (and as you may know doesn’t work as well as expected, although does the job…but barely)

1 cup fat free french vanilla yogurt
    1 cup cranberry/pomegranate juice
    1/2 cups frozen berries

    Very simple and very delicious!!

  23. Kelley says:

Slushies for the kids – easy method is to put about 1/2 can of frozen juice from concentrate into the blender. The ones containing sugar (not pure juice) generally work the best. Add 20 or so ice cubes and 1 cup of water and blend on high. Keep adding a bit of water until you get a slushy consistency that you can drink with a straw. You can make endless varieties given the choice of frozen juices on the market. Much less expensive than the cornerstore slushies and you don’t use the disposable cups!

  24. Jean Geary says:

Peach belinnis, pomegranate belinnis mmmmm Nigella has lovely recipes for these. Raspberry lemonade, smoothies, oh my!!

  25. Rachel says:

I would make a Romesco Sauce -tomatoe, red peppers, almonds, stale bread, some smoked peppers, lemon juice, some red vinegar garlic, onion … then serve it with grilled fish.

  26. SandyChaney says:

Aw, Dana, I am a Yank, so you won’t send me my blender. But, if you did, I would whirl up some delicioso tequila margaritas with a splash of Grand Marnier. Mmmmmmmmmmm, good.

  27. cheryl says:

I can’t win, but I’d like you to know that I’d make milkshakes for my entire neighborhood. I really would. Maybe chocolate malted ones?

  28. Roanne says:

There’s nothing like fruit smoothies on a summer morning! I enjoy making them for my girls – and desperately need a new blender!

    Ingredients:
    Vanilla soy milk
    Fresh or frozen fruit
Maybe a touch of maple syrup

    And thats it!

    TORONTO, CANADA

  29. Mango lassis, of course!
    http://christie-corner.blogspot.com/2007/03/lassi-comes-home.html

If it’s after noon, I might even add a splash of peach schnapps. Shhhh. Don’t tell anyone!

  30. Heather says:

We love the Raspberry/Orange Smoothies that I whiz up in our blender that is on it’s last legs…I know it won’t help, but I love my Oster hand mixer, so I’m sure I’d love the blender. You posted the contest on my Birthday, so I’m bound to win, right?;)

    I’m in Saskatoon, SK

  31. Lorraine says:

My kids love smoothies. Frozen strawberries, yogurt, orange juice and some sugar/agave syrup to sweeten the mix. I sometimes sneak in some blueberries or banana but they don’t really like too many flavours mixed together. The simple frappe is the best. They would be thrilled if I had a blender of such fancy proportions to whirl their treats up with 😀

  32. Hi Dana…I would make lots of strawberry smoothies with just a touch of honey to sweeten Mmmmmmm . I freeze my strawberry’s and when added to 1% milk it thickens like a milkshake .

  33. John Biggs says:

I usually start out telling myself I’m making a protein shake, but it almost always turns into something …less healthy. A scoop of protein and the appropriate amount of milk, but then I’ll add ice cream, honey, banana, strawberries…Other times I’ll use orange or pineapple juice instead of milk, but I’d still use the ice cream. It works. With that blender, though, I think I’d rather use fresh pineapple chunks instead of juice. I also like bananas, peanut butter and ice cream together. I almost always use vamilla ice cream, but when I want to pretend I’m trying to cut back on calories, I use vanilla yogurt or a good coffee yogurt.

  34. Ann D says:

I would make frappacino’s with Baileys, sip it in the sun on the patio, and then have a nap…ya, that’s it.

In reality, I would make smoothies for the kids, while fantasizing about the first idea.

    Cheers!

  35. Ricki says:

I love green smoothies–though mine have hidden green, overlaid with blueberries. Just delicious, and a great breakfast: Mystery Smoothie recipe.

  36. dinnerwithjulie says:

Ooh – I like winning stuff too! I have a bunch of chunked watermelon in the freezer with which to make margaritas – it’s what happens to all those mealy, disappointing watermelons over the summer. Inevitably there are a few!

  37. Ellen says:

Tis the season for fresh Ontario berries, fat free/sugar free yoghurt, Ice and maybe some extras you prefer to put in your smoothie.

8 am in my apartment it is 25+ (don’t like & allergic to AirConditioning) so a cold fresh smoothie would taste amazing and cut the heat nicely!!

On those cold winter nights, hot milk, cocoa and bailies.

Oh wait, bailies and ice in the summer…oh I could go on and on..

    Enjoy 🙂

  38. JACKIE HASKINS says:

THAT BEAUTIFUL BLENDER WOULD BE ON MY COUNTER TO USE EVERYDAY–SEVERAL TIMES A DAY!!!

  39. Sue says:

    Hi!
I’m bummed that you can’t send that blender across the border to me in Minnesota. haha! I gave mine to my daughter. It was part of an Oster mixer and worked fine even after 25 years. These days I use my immersion blender or the bowl of my food processor, but should probably replace my upright blender. A nice cold Margarita would be awfully good. 🙂

  40. From Manitoulin Island…who won the blender?

  41. danamccauley says:

    Hi Pauline,

The winner, Lorraine from BC, was chosen and announced here in Tuesday’s post: https://danamccauley.wordpress.com/2009/06/23/everyones-a-winner
