Weekend Party Trick: 60-second appetizer

brie1

The challenge: make a great looking appetizer that tastes fantastic in less time than it takes to wiggle into your party clothes.

The solution: Fruit and Nut topped Camembert

1 wheel Camembert or Brie cheese
Liquid honey
1 handful Back to Nature Raisins, Almonds, Pumpkin Seeds, Pecans and Apricots blend

Place the cheese on a platter and drizzle with some honey. Mound some of the trail mix on top. Drizzle with a bit more honey and serve with grapes, apple slices and crackers.

Need a wine match? Try an off-dry Riesling for white drinkers or a light, fruity pinot noir for a red choice. Can’t decide between red or white? Prosecco is a great match, too!

Now that you’ve seen my favourite party trick, tell me about yours!

That’s a pretty big handful! Are you a giantess?

Looks yummy! Mine is 1 tub of cream cheese, on a plate, topped with red pepper jelly. Tastes amazing with ACE Bakery artisan crisps (olive oil & sea salt). I have to give my mom credit, I learned this trick from her!

I do the cream cheese thing too in a pinch – except that I usually pack it into a little crock to make it look even more homemade…I also like mango chutney or fig spread on top.

    Beautiful idea Dana!

My “in-a-pinch” appetizer is a log of goat cheese topped with a mixture of diced sundried tomatoes, green onions, fresh garlic and lots of extra-virgin olive oil. I serve it with homemade crostini or those Ace crisps (delicious indeed!). Bon appétit!

60 seconds you say? Count me in! That’s about all the time I have to spare this week … and this looks like a good idea for when folks arrive hungry next Thursday.

In the same vein as the other tricks – I generally opt for a nice soft goat cheese paired with chutney or some such when in a hurry.

  6. Would you ever pop the cheese in a low oven to get it a little melty before topping it with all that goodness?

For me, goat cheese-stuffed dates wrapped in bacon & broiled. I only made this once, but I remember it!

Would I? Indeed. I also sometimes (in summer – but a Cali girl like you could do it now) often put this kind of thing on a plank on the grill for a few minutes. Delish!

I love stuffed dates and the bacon sounds like a great addition. Yum!

I like the cheese and chutney too but it is osunding a little tired right now. I love the looks of your Dana! Might be a new treat for my house.

  8. Weird. My answer went AWOL. You win in the quick treat department!

I had drop-in guests the other night. I grated some sharp cheddar onto homemade rosemary crackers (store bought would be fine, too) and popped them into the oven to melt the cheese. We then topped each cracker with Rootham’s fig spread. The tart cheese and sweet figs were a great combination.

That does sound yummy! My son actually does something similar (although more down market to be sure). He drizzles triscuits with honey and tops them with cheese before heating them up. Pretty good. Except when he tops them with salsa. That’s just weird.
